Recap Your Journey: 2020 Edition

I originally shared this in in my newsletter.

I hesitated to share this. Because revisiting the past year is the last thing that I or you want to do right now.

But if you're thinking about setting goals and intentions for yourself or your team this year, stop.

Don't do it...yet.

My clients are exhausted. I'm exhausted. I assume you're exhausted, too.

Trying to move forward and make an impact while exhausted is a recipe for...more exhaustion. It's also a recipe for having crappy ideas, a shallow vision, and uninspiring goals, let alone the confidence or clarity to execute on any of it in style.

One of my goals for 2020 was to get back into teaching my Story Driven Leadership workshops. Last January, I had taken much of 2019 off after my son was born and was ready to hit the road.

And then 2020 happened.

A family member was hospitalized with COVID (he's better now). Schools shut down. I had to give up my office lease. Most of my workshops and speaking gigs were cancelled. I had to cancel the rest because my 1 and 4 year old were home and I needed to prioritize them and my coaching clients.

I did not meet my goals this year. And I had a tough year for me, my family, and my business as a result. And it was a tough year regardless.

I'm devastated.

But I also learned something.

One of the reasons that I love to teach workshops is that I love to share powerful things that I've learned and refined over the years working with some of the most amazing leaders in the world...so that you can use these things to be more super at work and in life.

While I can't teach a workshop right now (they're in the works for 2021!), here's a simple story-driven reflection exercise that I do with my leadership coaching clients before they start thinking about the future.

By looking back, and seeing the full story of what you experienced last year with kindness and curiosity, you too will build energy for what's next.

So...what was your story this year?

Here are two photos that sum up mine.

**Hugs,** happy new year, and let me know how it goes.
